Making a Numerical aquifer the right way

Post by Tejaswy »

Hello Guys,

I wanted to ask you a question. I have made a reservoir. Its a gas reservoir with a very strong aquifer support. And when I say strong I mean really really strong.

The gas reservoir is 500 m and the aquifer is 1 km. A very strong is very common to Australian reservoirs.

Now for reasons for support of the gas reservoir I chose a Numerical aquifer to be modeled.

Now because of the size of the aquifer I had to write 33,000 lines of code to define the Numerical Aquifer.

Please see a sample f the code defining the aquifer

Now is there a easy way to do this.
AQUDIMS
33000 33000 0 0 0 0 /
..
...
...
AQUNUM
1 50 18 1 10000 1500 1* 750 2* 1 1/
1 49 18 1 10000 1500 1* 750 2* 1 1/
1 48 18 1 10000 1500 1* 750 2* 1 1/
1 47 18 1 10000 1500 1* 750 2* 1 1/
goes on till 33000 lines

...
...
...
AQUCON
1 1 50 10 17 1 20 'K-' 1 /
/
NOw when I run the file I get 33,000 line of comments saying

@--COMMENT AT TIME 0.0 DAYS ( 1-JAN-2010):
@ AQUIFER NUMBER 1 IN CELL ( 35, 50, 1)
@ WAS NOT PLACED IN THE WATER ZONE. THE WATER SATURATION
@ HAS NOW BEEN EQUILIBRATED TO UNITY.
[/quote]

Now this does not have any effect on the aquifer as on floviz it shoes up just fine, I was wondering what exactly did i miss in defining my aquifer or what am I doing wrong.?

Its all fine. ECLIPSE display comments just make u aware what you have did actually, whatever it appeared to you previously (during data entry)

But with 33,000 lines of comments it gets really hard to read through the *.prt file. Any way to get rid of it. There has to be a better way.....

Keywords of type RPTXXXX Control the data writing in the *.prt file.
If can share here OR mail me your data file i will go through it, and better able to tell you about the solution.

Which version of ECLIPSE are you running?

2008 manual has this,
"All forms of messages (warnings, errors etc.) are now output by default to a separate file, extension MSG, in XML format. The feature is intended primarily for simulation postprocessors, but can be controlled with the MSGFILE keyword."

I am not too concerned about the *.prt file. What concerns me is that I have made some mistake in defining the aquifer. I wanted to know the correct way of defining it.
The method where I do not get all these comments.

I have altered the method of SWAT intro, it will eliminate that 33000 comments

Extremely wrong!!!!!

Simply you do not need to write own 33,000 lines.

What you have to do is write down AQUCON keyword properly as you have to define the lower and upper limit of your connection. YOU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE EACH INDIVIDUAL.

My well dimensions are

My aquifer starts from
50 18 1 and ends at 1 50 20

My current AQUACON is

I can upload the file if you want.

Hi Tejsawy,

Your problem is that you are defining aquifer connections above the gas-water contact! This is a very big problem and your results will be wrong if you do not correct your data. All aquifer connections should always be placed below the GWC (or WOC for an oil reservoir). In general, only the gridblocks at the bottom and/or sides of the reservoir below the GWC or WOC are connected to the numerical aquifer which exists below them and/or adjacent to them.

This is a fatal error in our simulator. We recommend against the use of numerical aquifers, not only because of the high potential for misuse but also inaccuracy. Include the aquifer in your grid instead.

So what type of aquifers would you recommend to use?
Fetkovich or carter tracey or a SWAT ?
