Flowing Bottom Hole pressure and well water cut

Hello everyone,

I have a very basic question but I would like to ask to clear it through.

How does increase in well water cut decreases flowing bottom hole pressure?

I know flowing Bottom hole pressure and static bottom hole pressure are inversely
proportional to each other.

I would love it if anyone can explain relationship betwene FBHP, SBHP, THP and WWCT with reference to water cut increase or decrease.

Good question.

Static Reservoir pressure or Average reservoir pressure is the the pressure of the fluid inside the reservoir which is constant at any certain time Lets say the reservoir X currently has a reservoir pressure of 3000 psia. for the well basis some people called Static BHP (SBHP).

For BHFP is the pressure at the perforations or the sand face in dynamic state (while well is flowing).

If the well shut in for longer time the BHP or this BHFP become the same as reservoir pressure (static phase).

The Tubing Head Pressure (THP) is the pressure at the well head (regardless the well is flowing or SI).

The draw down is the difference between the reservoir pressure and BHFP.

If we increase the choke size means increase the draw down means higher production rate allow the reservoir fluid produce faster and in case of oil wet reservoirs the water may breakthrough faster.


In general the draw down is proportional to the oil rate and water cut.

I have one more query please.So if one has to do vertical lift at well level.

And one has got water cut reaching the well.

Will it help or hinder our vertical lift process?

If i understood you correctly, The more water production (Higher water cut) the higher lifting column and hence less flow rate at constant Choke size.

One question please.

You mentiond , " in case of oil wet reservoirs the water may breakthrough faster by increasing the DD".

Can you please tell me reason behind it?

Also how is the case when we increase Drawdown in Sandstone reservoirs? doesnt it effect the same as Carbonates?

I understand carbonates have bigger transition zones in 10's of meters compared to Sandstones.

Generally, in oil wet reservoir the mobile phase is water because the oil prefer to be in contact with the rock. So, when the DD increase the total fluid flow increase.

But,since the water is more mobile in that case then the Sw will increase versus time and if you look for relative permeability curves you will find water permeability (mobility) will increase with Sw..
