Difference Between DST, MDT and RFT Well Test Data

Post by kingfisher85 »

Hello fellow members,

I am a newbie in the world of well testing. What is the basic difference between MDT, RFT and DST well testing?

Is there any difference in the data gained out of these tests? Does anyone have sample data sets for each of these types... I need to know the columns in each of these tests.

Thank you in advance!

There is a difference between MDT/RFT and DST

Moduler Dynamic Tester MDT and Repeat Formation Tester RFT, measures the formation pressure Vs depth in the open hole by using Wire Line or E Line.

So, the data obtained from MDT/RFT is formation pressure Vs depth.
The benefits of using this tool are :

- Measure the Initial Reservoir pressure.
- Measure the fluid gradient inside the reservoir and hence, the type of the fluid inside the reservoir.
- Detect the fluid contact (OWC, OGC and GOC) if any.
- Collect a downhole MDT sample at the reservoir conditions.
- Detect the vertical homogeneity. (detect the vertical communication between two or more layers).

While the Drill Stem Testing DST measures the Initial/Average reservoir pressure at a certain datum

The data obtained from DST is the Pressure and Temp. Vs Time.
The benefits of using this tool are:

- Measure the Average Reservoir Pressure and static reservoir pressure.
- by performing Pressure Build Up PBU and Draw Down DD we can calculate the well productivity and draw IPR curve
- Determine the Skin Factor.
- Detect the reservoir boundary/s if any
- Drainage radius.
- Average reservoir permeability.
- Collect surface recombined sample.
- Calculate the reservoir heterogeneity.

In attachments you will find two field data as an examples for both DST and MDT.
